The Passing of the Peace

The Passing of the Peace is as old as Christian worship itself. Paul says to his churches (in Romans), "Greet one another with a holy kiss," and "Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss." (I Thessalonians). Peter writes, "Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ."

Middle Eastern people still give each other a respectful kiss on each cheek. Our equivalent is a handshake or if you are sure it’s appropriate, an embrace. (There are some members of our church who don’t want handshakes, they want hugs! They’ll let you know who they are!).

Do you know the names of the others who sit in the pews around you?

Next time you "pass the peace" why not give your first name as you use the traditional words: "The peace of the Lord be with you" or the response: "And also with you."

If you are less formal, exchanging names should be even easier to do!
