Music at First Church
First Presbyterian Church has a vibrant
music program including the First Presbyterian Choir and the First Presbyterian
Handbell Choir led by our music directors Marnie Giesbrecht and Joachim Segger.
Hear and sing with our 1908 Casavant Organ, restored in 2007, as well as with
our grand pianos. Vocal or instrumental solos are also frequent parts of
worship at First Presbyterian Church.
We welcome new members and encourage
anyone interested to contact one of our music directors. The choir meets on
Wednesday nights from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, and on Sunday mornings at 10:00am
before the 11:00am service. The handbell choir, coordinated by Mark Segger, meets
on Wednesday nights from 6:15 to 7:15pm, and on Sunday mornings at 9:30am on
days when we will be playing.

Wendy Grasdahl wins 2014 Arts and Culture Award
Great cities are built by people who are inspired to do more. The City of Edmonton's 2014 annual event recognized FPC's very own outstanding Edmontonian for her contribution in the area of arts and culture.
Wendy Grasdahl is a trumpeter, conductor, and music educator. She is the founder, artistic director, and principal conductor of Festival City Winds, a society that offers opportunities for amateur musicians. As conductor of three of the society’s four bands and overseer of all their performance aspects, Grasdahl has made substantial, enduring contributions. She frequently shares her expertise as a clinician and adjudicator at local, regional, and national levels and supports the wider musical community though membership in numerous organizations. Her involvement as an officer and director with the Canadian Forces Music Branch and 12 summers conducting adult bands at the Canada-USA International Music Camp are just some of the activities where her efforts have raised Edmonton’s music profile.
Wendy’s connections to FPC date back to the early 1970s, when she was hired as choir director. She and the organist were hired at the same time. The organist was Marnie Giesbrecht (FPC's current organist and choir director, who returned in that position a few years ago). Both women had been baptised in and have been attending First Church. They were the youngest team in such positions in Edmonton. When Wendy was hired she had her Bachelor of Music degree finished and had only her thesis to write to finish her Master’s degree.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity CALENDAR
Keep the spirit of unity going by attending one or both of the two remaining events for the Edmonton area for the 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
- Wednesday, January 29: The Edmonton Area Ministerial Association holds a monthly Ecumenical Prayer Meeting at 9:00 AM in the Marketplace Chapel in the West Edmonton Mall. Everyone is most welcome to attend!
- Friday, January 31: An evening of dialogue between Catholics and Mennonites on “Reconciliation” at Lendrum Mennonite Brethren Church beginning at 7:00 PM. Hosted by the Edmonton Mennonite-Catholic dialogue committee. Please note: this is an invitational event.

OBITUARY - Eileen McCallum (1927-2015)
It is with great sadness we announce the death of mother and grandmother, Eileen McCallum on January 18th, 2015 at the age of 88 years. Eileen is survived by her children: Scot, Jane MacGregor, Mark (Naomi), grandchildren Caitlin (Vasco) Curto and Britanny McCallum and numerous nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Jack, and brother Richard Massie.
A memorial service was held at First Presbyterian Church, 10025 - 105 Street on Saturday, January 24th at 1:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations were be made to WIN House, PO Box 20088 RPO Beverly, Edmonton, AB T5W 5E6.

PWS&D Update - January 18 Harvest of Letters campaign
Take part in the Harvest of Letters campaign and write to your MP urging the Canadian government to invest in smallholder agriculture in developing countries.
Up to 80% of the world’s poor depend on farming to feed their families year round. With changing weather patterns, drought and the rising cost of seeds, farming is becoming more difficult and unpredictable, leaving smallholder farmers vulnerable to hunger. Service for 2015 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (Jan 18 @ 7pm)
This year's liturgy will have a particular reference to Christianity as it is lived out in Brazil. The theme for this week is: "Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink'" based on John 4:7. A reception will follow the service. We look forward to seeing you there!

Update from Presbyterian World Service & Development (PWS&D)
Sayed Mohammad makes bricks to support his family. He works during the hot summers, as well as the cold winters. For a time, his ten-year-old daughter, Saima, worked alongside him. Through a Presbyterian World Service & Development project in Afghanistan, Sayed learned that his daughter was too young to be doing hard labour at the brick factory and that it was his responsibility to send her to school. “I feel really proud of myself now, because everyone at home appreciates that I am sending my daughter to school.” Not only is Sayed sending his enabling his daughter to pursue an education, he is working hard to raise awareness about how education can change children’s futures. Since PWS&D started supporting the girls’ education project in Afghanistan, over 4,000 girls have been enrolled in school.
